{"id":8701,"date":"2016-04-14T09:03:21","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T13:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts\/?p=8701"},"modified":"2024-01-30T13:18:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T18:18:31","slug":"spc-student-performs-florida-orchestra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts-humanities-design-educational-information\/spc-student-performs-florida-orchestra\/","title":{"rendered":"SPC student performs with Florida Orchestra, Busch Gardens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Melissa Petrescue describes herself as \u201ca business major in college and a music major in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Currently pursuing her bachelor\u2019s degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/managementbas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Management and Organizational Leadership<\/a>, she credits SPC with opening doors for her educationally, musically and professionally.<\/p>\n<p>As an award-winning concert pianist, Petrescue has performed with the Florida Orchestra and at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay through connections she\u2019s made at SPC.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Student Testimonial: Melissa Petrescue\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qTLE0R8kq8I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As a business-savvy entrepreneur, Petrescue is using lessons learned in her business degree to further her natural musical talent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am kind of my own business,\u201d said Petrescue. \u201cI\u2019m self-employed so these skills and these tools that I\u2019m acquiring: marketing, entrepreneurship, even project management, can come in handy with planning and organizing the music projects that I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The gift of music<\/h3>\n<p>Her love for music started at an early age. Her mother was a piano teacher so music students were coming in and out of their house all the time. Her first lessons began at age 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a very musical family,\u201d she said. \u201cI used to fall asleep to the exhilarating sounds of Rachmaninoff as my brothers practiced at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started taking dual enrollment classes at SPC as a high school student in 2010 and earned her A.A. degree in 2013. During that time she studied classical piano with SPC professor <a href=\"http:\/\/web.spcollege.edu\/instructors\/id\/xu.hui\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Xu Hui<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8702\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8702\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/dressing-room.jpg\" alt=\"elissa Petrescue with SPC professor Dr. Xu Hui in the dressing room at the Mahaffey Theater before her recent performance with the Florida Orchestra\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Melissa Petrescue with SPC professor Dr. Xu Hui in the dressing room at the Mahaffey Theater before her recent performance with the Florida Orchestra.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I would be here today if it wasn\u2019t for getting linked up with Dr. Xu Hui,\u201d she said. \u201cShe is a professional instructor and brilliant pianist, who I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to study with and prepare for competitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Petrescue has also participated in the SPC Piano Concert Series Master Classes, working with Steinway Artist and Artist-in-Residence Rebecca Penneys.<\/p>\n<p>Her hard work over the years has paid off with a long list of awards that have opened doors for her to perform professionally with organizations like the Florida Orchestra and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n<h3>Top prize: playing with the Florida Orchestra<\/h3>\n<p>In 2015, Petrescue won first place in the senior piano division of the Justine LeBaron Young Artists Competition for playing the first movement of Mendelssohn\u2019s Piano Concert No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 25.<\/p>\n<p>Held annually at the St. Petersburg College Music Center, the competition is sponsored by the Florida Orchestra Musicians Association. This year\u2019s event is scheduled for Saturday, April 16 and is open to the public. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridaorchestramusicians.biz\/2016-young-artist-competition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about the competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When Petrescue won the 2015 competition, the Florida Orchestra invited her to perform with them at Clearwater\u2019s Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Mahaffey Theater in downtown St. Petersburg in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerforming with the Florida Orchestra was surreal,\u201d said Petrescue. \u201cIt was like a childhood fantasy that I was living out. It was absolutely thrilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Melissa Petrescue Performs with the Florida Orchestra\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CUVnWCZQ14k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Petrescue also played with members of the Florida Orchestra in a 2012 chamber music concert after winning the piano division of the Stephen P. Brown Concerto competition. As the featured pianist, she played Schubert\u2019s Quintet in A major.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Petersburg College\u2019s Music programs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Making connections<\/h4>\n<p>Petrescue shared other talents with fellow students as a peer advisor on SPC\u2019s Seminole Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a peer advisor was such an incredible experience,\u201d she said. \u201cI love the concept of using my personal experience as a student, along with professional academic advising training to help enhance the college experience for others. Having that personal connection with somebody \u2013 it really sets SPC apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Petrescue was invited to join other peer advisors as part of an expert panel at the National Academic Advising Association\u2019s Summer Institute.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8703\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8703 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Peer-Advising-Conference-e1460636994361.jpg\" alt=\"Peer Advising Conference\" width=\"700\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Melissa Petrescue, Melissa Dabydeen, Madeline Stubbs and Sydney Mundorff became the experts on a panel during a recent conference on peer advising.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis conference has provided me with a much better understanding of the purpose behind the peer advising program,\u201d she said. \u201cI have a greater sense of purpose as I see how my role fits in with the big picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit of working as a peer advisor was making her own connections. While working as a peer advisor during one of SPC\u2019s Working Wednesday events aimed at getting students into jobs, Petrescue met a recruiter from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out they were holding auditions, and it has always been my dream to perform at the park, so I auditioned on a whim to play background piano music in the Crown Colony Restaurant as part of their Christmas Town event,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>It started out as a seasonal gig, and then turned into a part-time job as she was invited back to perform in various day-shows a few days a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for attending the Working Wednesday event, I wouldn\u2019t have known the opportunity even existed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8704\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8704\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Busch-Gardens-Kinetix-Band.jpg\" alt=\"Petrescue performs with the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Kinetix Band.\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts-humanities-design-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Busch-Gardens-Kinetix-Band.jpg 700w, https:\/\/blog.spcollege.edu\/arts-humanities-design-educational-information\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/04\/Busch-Gardens-Kinetix-Band-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Petrescue performs with the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Kinetix Band.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSPC does an excellent job of connecting students with the community through internships, job fairs, conferences, community service projects, as well as other extracurricular and career service programs,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are a tremendous wealth of resources and tools available if students will take advantage of them. Though I have been really proactive in my pursuits, I thank God for bringing these opportunities across my path.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>SPC Foundation Scholarships made college affordable<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Like many SPC students, scholarships from the St. Petersburg College Foundation made Petrescue\u2019s education affordable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so thankful for the financial support that has greatly helped fund my education,\u201d she said. \u201cThrough the Foundation, I have been selected to receive generous contributions through the private gifts of individuals, community groups and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While at SPC, Petrescue was awarded the following Foundation Scholarships:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rotary Club of Seminole Scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Robert and Mildred Baynard State Contribution Scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Robert and Mildred Baynard Ethics in Business Scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Needy Students Scholarship<\/li>\n<li>Vivian T. Greve Scholarship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcollege.edu\/foundation\/instructions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPC Foundation Scholarships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The business side of things<\/h3>\n<p>As an entrepreneur, Petrescue was looking for a broad, practical degree that she could apply to the variety of things she is doing. She found it in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Management and Organizational Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Petrescue teaches private lessons and sings professionally for a variety of special events, concerts and ceremonies. She was the piano accompanist for St. Petersburg College\u2019s <em>Xanadu <\/em>and <em>Godspell <\/em>theater performances.<\/p>\n<p>Petrescue has also taught masters classes for the American Stage Theater Company, where she also worked as a music director for their youth summer camp programs in 2014 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have had several leadership opportunities cross my path and I figured this degree would be the best tool to help me continue to grow in that area,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As for her future career path, Petrescue is learning as much as she can and sees her business degree as a possible stepping stone into musical directing or orchestra management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now I am very passionate about the performing arts,\u201d she said. \u201cI dream of traveling to perform and study abroad! Perhaps in the future, I will be more serious about teaching. I also enjoy working with people, and applying my leadership and administrative skills in an organization. Whether I do these things separately or somehow merge them, I am open-minded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She highly recommends SPC as a place to grow, find your passion and make connections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe classroom experience is only half the story,\u201d she said. \u201cThe faculty are incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. They offer degree programs that are relevant and continuously expand on them.
