Largo native Natalie DePergola has been drumming since\u00a0she was 6 years old. She learned the basics from her Uncle\u00a0Bill, quickly graduating from a toy store drum kit to a full-size
\nPearl set. Since her first public performance at age 9,\u00a0she has gone on to play at venues throughout Tampa Bay,\u00a0Nashville and even Canada.<\/p>\n

After winning first place in a talent contest sponsored by\u00a0the St. Petersburg Times<\/em>, DePergola\u2019s star has continued\u00a0to rise. In 2013, she was chosen for the GRAMMY
\nMuseum\u2019s Music Revolution Project at Ruth Eckerd Hall,\u00a0where musically gifted high school students explore\u00a0songwriting, production, performance, and the business
\nof music.<\/p>\n

Other notable achievements include her top-three\u00a0finishes in the 2014 and 2015 Hit Like a Girl drumming\u00a0competition, as well as her strong showing at the 2015\u00a0Guitar Center Drum-Off in Clearwater. She also holds\u00a0endorsements from international brands ddrum and Zildjian.<\/p>\n

Lessons provide foundation for music career
\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Much of DePergola\u2019s early music education took place at\u00a0Seminole Music & Sound, under the guidance of manager\u00a0John Spinelli. She has studied with legendary drummers
\nJohn Blackwell, Vinny Appice and Brent Easton, and cites\u00a0local musician Rodney Rocques as another mentor. DePergola is currently a junior at Florida Virtual School, and recently entered St. Petersburg College’s Music Industry Recording Arts (MIRA)<\/a> as a dual enrolled student. Fall 2015 marked her first semester at the\u00a0college; her classes included Fundamentals of Music and Critical Listening, as well as a weekly private drum lesson with professor and MIRA Academic Chair Patrick Hernly. Because DePergola is such an advanced drummer, Hernly\u2019s lessons explore different types of percussion, such as bat\u00e1, caj\u00f3n, and timbales.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy learning these styles on authentic instruments, it increases the breadth of
\nmusical styles that Natalie is acquainted with and allows her to apply those concepts
\nto the drums,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

DePergola expresses great appreciation for her classes and instructors at SPC.
\n\u201cPatrick is an amazing drummer, and he helps me identify and improve on my weak
\nareas,\u201d she noted. \u201cHis Critical Listening class has completely changed the way I listen
\nto music; I\u2019m now hearing so much more than just chords and instrumentation. And
\nin Fundamentals of Music, Austin Vickrey has been teaching me how to read, play,
\nnotate, and write music for the piano and other instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Passion for Learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While DePergola is enrolled in MIRA\u2019s Artist with Performance Focus subplan, she is
\neager to explore all facets of the program.\u00a0\u201cI want to be more than just a musician; I want to know how to record and produce,\u00a0and how to write songs. I want to be a well-rounded professional, and there are so\u00a0many people here who can help me do that,\u201d she asserted.
\nDePergola also enjoys getting to know her fellow MIRA students.\u00a0\u201cThey often ask me to help with their side projects and lay down drum tracks in the\u00a0studio. I love doing that,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I love playing with musicians who are better\u00a0than me; I can learn so much from them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hernly\u2019s comments echo DePergola\u2019s eagerness to learn and the ways MIRA can
\nbenefit her. He notes that she is \u201cextremely teachable\u201d and credits her \u201cexcellent
\ncombination of pattern recognition and audio-motor feedback loop\u201d as an advantage,
