The theory sequence\u2014levels 1 through 4\u2014is required of bachelor\u2019s degrees in Music Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy, Musical Theater, and other music degrees throughout the country. SPC\u2019s music theory sequence is also a wonderful experience for non-degree seeking students interest in the inner workings of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Online Experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>SPC celebrates over 10 years of teaching Music Theory online. Our delivery includes clear objectives, learning resources, contextual videos, interactive self-assessments, and graded digital worksheets with instant feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connectivist Course Design<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our online music theory classes feature a Connectivist Course Design! This means you get to choose your learning resources based on your preferred learning style and desired budget. You may use any published music theory text, or utilize free online learning resources to master course objectives. Instant feedback and multiple chances at self-assessment help make sure you are learning material as intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Feedback<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A former SPC transient student offered the following feedback about SPC Music Theory Online. \u201cFor all those that are new to this format, I can tell you that it is amazing. I took Theory 1 online in the spring, and this format incorporates so many different ways to learn a concept that it is almost guaranteed that you will understand even the most complex stuff. I am really looking forward to the next leg of the journey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Affordable and Transferable<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All SPC Music Theory courses meet State of Florida Common Prerequisite course codes for transfer to State of Florida universities and colleges. These courses have successfully transferred to out-of-state institutions, but check with your school registrar prior to enrolling. SPC\u2019s in-state tuition is $111.75 per credit hour. <a href=\"https:\/\/spcollege.edu\/financial-aid\/tuition-and-fees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPC\u2019s current out-of-state tuition of $386.90 is less than many universities\u2019 tuition rates for in-state residents.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MUT 1001 \u2013 Fundamentals of Music (3 credits) <\/strong><br><em>Start from the beginning, learning the basics of music notation, pitch, and rhythm. This course preps students for music notation note-reading and becoming familiar with the piano keyboard. Students will be able to identify and notate pitches, rhythm, meter, major scales, minor scales, and create all qualities of triads and 7th chords.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 1111 \u2013 Music Theory 1 (3 credits)<br><\/strong><em>This course reviews and builds on the content introduced in Music Fundamentals with the goal of becoming fluent in the skills of identifying intervals, scales, and chords. The course utilizes the music of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven for most of its examples. Music Theory 1 finishes with a detailed introduction to species counterpoint in preparation for four-part voice leading. *(co-requisite MUT 1241 Aural Theory 1)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 1112 \u2013 Music Theory 2 (3 credits)<br><\/strong><em>This course builds on the content of Music Theory 1. It goes into detail of four-part voice leading, including part writing of various chords and studying chord function. The course utilizes Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and other composers of these eras for most of its examples. Music Theory 2 finishes with the study of secondary dominant and leading-tone chords. *(co-requisite MUT 1242 Aural Theory 2)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 2116 \u2013 Music Theory 3 (3 credits)<br><\/strong><em>This course builds on the content of Music Theory 2. It explores the topics of modulation, chromaticism, augmented 6th chords, and musical form. The course utilizes the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Debussy, and other composers of these eras for most of its examples. Music Theory 3 finishes with the study of chromatic mediants, extended chords, and an introduction into jazz theory chords and forms. *(co-requisite MUT 2246 Aural Theory 3)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 2117 \u2013 Music Theory 4 (3 credits)<br><\/strong><em>This course builds on the content of Music Theory 3. It explores, in detail, atonal music theory concepts including integer notation, mod12 arithmetic, interval-class vectors, prime forms, and Allen Forte\u2019s set classes. The course utilizes the music of Babbit, Berg, Webern, Schoenberg, and other composers of these eras for most of its examples. Music Theory 4 finishes with the construction of the 12-tone matrix, total serialism, and chance music. *(co-requisite MUT 2246 Aural Theory 4)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Aural Theories<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MUT 1241 \u2013 Aural Theory 1 (1 credit)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 1242 \u2013 Aural Theory 2 (1 credit)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 2246 \u2013 Aural Theory 3 (1 credit)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MUT 2247 \u2013 Aural Theory 4 (1 credit)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Aural theory courses are companion ear-training experiences to the Music Theory courses. They are required of students pursuing degrees in Music, Music Education, Musical Theater, and Music Therapy at most universities. SPC\u2019s Aural Theory courses use a Connectivist Course Design, allowing students to choose their own learning resources. These courses are designed to help students create their own weekly achievement goals to best achieve self-improvement in the area of aural skills.
