When St. Petersburg College<\/a>\u2019s Humanities and Fine Arts<\/a> Chair Jonathan Barnes heard that his friend was looking for face protection for his job as an emergency room physician in Ocala, Barnes started looking around online and found a way to help, using his personal 3D printer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in\nthe United States, many challenges have presented themselves for healthcare\nproviders, including an immediate shortage of protective gear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barnes found an open source design for\na face shield from a Czech company, Prusa, who make 3D printers. He tried one,\nmade a few tweaks, and then set about making the much-needed items. Though he\nused his personal 3D printer to make the first few masks, Barnes saw he\u2019d need backup.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI quickly realized it wasn\u2019t enough,\u201d\nhe said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With permission to bring home two\nprinters from SPC\u2019s Humanities and Fine Arts department, his output increased, and\nover the past few days, other people have offered up their printers for the\ncause, after seeing Barnes\u2019 posts on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight now, we can make six shields\nevery four hours,\u201d he said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the machine has done its work, the hands-on part of\nproduction begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe clear\npart is mylar stencil film, which is hand cut, and the holes are punched with a\nthree-hole punch I modified to make it a little quicker,\u201d Barnes said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barnes\nis making the shields in addition to scrambling to get two of his classes\nonline, help other instructors and fill other roles while he and his family are\nself-quarantining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m\nmaking masks, but I\u2019m also teaching my classes, doing the rest of my job and\nacting as a first grade teacher and short-order cook,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends, family and word of mouth have made the orders fly in. So far,\nBarnes has donated more than 30 shields to doctors in Clearwater, Orlando, St.\nPetersburg, Ocala and Sarasota. He even sent some all the way to Baltimore,\nMaryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe doctor\nwho picked them up yesterday was super excited because the supplies are incredibly\nlimited,\u201d Barnes said. \u201cThe feedback from all the doctors has been really\npositive.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Barnes\nsays he will continue to make and donate the shields as long as he has\nmaterials to do so, because he feels it\u2019s a great way to help out in the\ncommunity during a trying time, especially for healthcare providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
